“Gramps, Gramps, would you buy me Topolino?”
It’s a cold winter day in 1996. The sun shyly lights up my face—the face of a six-year-old boy. In front of the historic Panini newsstand on Corso Duomo, I tug at my grandfather’s coat and point eagerly at the wall of comics.
My grandfather was a kind man, and without a doubt, the best guide I have ever known. We take a few steps toward the Duomo’s facade.
“Emanuele, do you see those two lions? With their strength, they hold up the Duomo. But did you know they can also tell if you’ve been good or bad?”
Truth be told, I wasn’t always a well-behaved child.
We continue into Piazza Grande, the heart of the city. I hop from one stone to another, my excitement bubbling over. Suddenly, my grandfather stops and points to the top of the Ghirlandina Tower.
“Look up! What do you see?”
I tilt my head back as far as it will go, straining to follow his finger.
