Visit a Real Trullo in Alberobello

Trullo Sovrano is located in the northern part of Alberobello. It is the only trullo with a raised floor, accessible from the inside via a masonry staircase, and was among the first to be built with mortar. The majestic conical dome, approximately 14 meters high, rises imposingly at the center of a group of twelve cones. The current left wing constitutes its original nucleus, which can be traced back to the early 1600s, while the remaining part was built in the first half of the 1700s on behalf of the wealthy family of the priest Cataldo Perta (1744 – 1809).
Over time, the building has served various uses: a courtyard, a chapel, an apothecary, a monastery, a country oratory, and a home. In the early 1800s, the relics of Saints Cosma and Damiano – patrons of Alberobello – were housed here. At the end of the 19th century, it became the property of the Sumerano family (whom it still belongs to), who lived here for decades.
The furnishings and all the objects on display are authentic.
